Up after a hawker feast? It’s mostly water
Why a big, salty meal shows up on tomorrow’s scale, and why it usually settles in a day or two.
Bak chor mee for lunch, chicken rice with soup for dinner, an iced drink in between. The next morning the scale is higher. Did one day of hawker food undo your week?
What really happened
A single day of eating more than usual cannot add much body fat. What it can add quickly is:
- Water held because of salt. Broths, sauces and gravies are often salty, and the body holds extra water to balance it.
- Water stored with carbohydrate. Rice and noodles are stored partly as glycogen, which binds water.
- Food in transit. A big meal is still being digested the next morning.
Most of this settles within a day or two once your meals return to normal.
What to do
- Nothing drastic. Do not skip meals to "fix" it.
- Drink water as usual.
- Keep your routine. Weigh in at your usual time.
- Let the trend decide. In Evenly, the gold line barely moves after one high day.
Enjoying hawker food
Hawker centres are part of daily life, and good food is part of a good life. If you want a gentle change, Nouri can suggest swaps you will actually enjoy, such as soup noodles instead of fried, kopi kosong instead of kopi with sugar and milk, or more vegetables on the side.
